Two Sermons on God's Purpose. In two sermons, delivered under different circumstances, John Wesley dwells on the doctrine of predestination. The topic held theological, evangelistic, and pastoral interest. The doctrine of a divine decree of election (and, therefore, also of condemnation) preceding all human behavior seemed to undermine the work of God's saving grace, which was to be understood as offered to all. Furthermore, the connected teaching of man's inability to change the assigned destiny invalidated responsibility in perseverance. Here Wesley expounds the scriptural teaching of 'prevenient' grace.
