China is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Much of its long history is a bloody trail of those who have heeded God’s call, proclaimed the message of Jesus Christ, and given their lives. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, the courage shown by the Christians killed by the rebels’ swords was such that the Boxers tore out the martyrs’ hearts in search of the secret of their boldness. Finding nothing but flesh, they concluded that it must be “foreign devil medicine.” They did not recognize the power of the Holy Spirit. Today, the same Holy Spirit strengthens Chinese Christians who are arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for attending unregistered churches, owning a Bible, and telling others about Christ.
